Biography
Louis Robbe, 1806-1887 is a Belge painter. He specializes in animal scenes in rural landscapes.
In addition to paintings, he did watercolors and engravings. He was the older brother and teacher of Henri Robbe. As a student of J. Van de Wiele in Courtrai, then at the Academy of this town where he starts to become successful in 1820 and 1824.
He will be a law teacher in Gand (1830). In addition, he will be nominated at the finance ministry in Brussels (1840). From 1833 and on, he will seriously dedicate himself to the paintings and will get some influence from masters such as J.B de Jonghe and E Verboeckhoven. He will introduce the realism in the animal sceneries. His first exposition was held in 1835 in Gand. Finally, he will work with Ch de Groux, in a project called “La Campine”, a canvas that brought them great success in Brussels in 1854.
