Artist bio
Isidore Verheyden is the son of the painter Jean François, known as François Verheyden[1], and Mélanie Horgnies[2]. His first professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels was Joseph Quinaux, and in 1866, he joined the studio of Jean-François Portaels.
Isidore Verheyden was both the uncle and father-in-law of Jean Vanden Eeckhoudt (a marriage between first cousins) and the grandfather of Zoum Walter. The latter mentions Isidore Verheyden's funeral in her memoir, Pour Sylvie.
Among the portraits are those Isidore Verheyden made of Anna Boch[3], who painted the present portrait of Isidore Verheyden. She was a cousin of Octave Maus[4],[5], founder of the Groupe des XX.
He was also part of the Tervueren School[6], a generation of painters dedicated to plein-air painting.
There are still painter's studios in Rue Isidore Verheyden[7] in Ixelles, which now bears his name.
